Educators: your expertise belongs on a bigger stage.

We’re looking for brilliant educators — especially those with a background in secondary or collegiate social studies, government, history, or law — to help bring clarity, context, and truth to our audience.

Millions of Americans are hungry for trustworthy, accessible information — and teachers are some of the most powerful communicators on the planet. If you’ve spent your career helping students understand the world, now’s your chance to help a national audience do the same.

About Us

Sharon McMahon is a #1 New York Times bestselling author, educator, and host of one of the most trusted civic platforms on the internet with:

  • A top Substack newsletter (The Preamble)
  • A nationally recognized podcast
  • A massive and loyal Instagram following
  • One of the biggest book clubs in the country

About the Role: Freelance Writer (Education + News)

We’re hiring freelance writers with classroom teaching experience to contribute to The Preamble. You’ll break down complex topics — from Supreme Court rulings to electoral politics to historical context for today’s headlines — in a way that’s smart, clear, and engaging for adult readers.

What You’ll Do

  • Pitch newsletter ideas and current news topics worth explaining
  • Write 1-4 pieces per month on subjects related to news, politics, history, or law
  • Collaborate with our editorial team to revise and refine your work

You Might Be a Fit If You…

  • Have 3+ years of experience teaching social studies, history, civics, or political science at the middle school, high school, or college level
  • Can explain complex topics in plain, accessible language — without dumbing them down
  • Are a fact-checker by instinct, not just by training
  • Are open to feedback, iteration, and collaborative editing
  • Have writing samples that show clarity, voice, and strong structure (formal publishing not required)
  • Are familiar with Sharon’s work and tone

Nice to Have (But Not Required)

  • Experience writing newsletters, op-eds, or explainers
  • A strong point of view on what stories are underexplained or misrepresented in public discourse

Logistics

  • Freelance (1099) role with flexible scheduling
  • Fully remote
  • Asynchronous work, but Eastern Time Zone deadlines must be met
