Senior Editor, The Preamble

The Preamble is where history, politics, and humanity meet. Founded by Sharon McMahon — an author, educator, and #1 New York Times bestselling writer with a nationwide audience of millions — we’re building one of the most trusted and fast-growing media brands in America.

With over 350,000 subscribers, The Preamble is a weekly digital magazine read by people who want to understand what’s happening in the world — and why it matters — without losing heart.

We’re looking for an experienced, high-level editor to help shape that mission every week.

The Role

You’ll oversee the full editorial process, from first pitch to final polish. You’ll edit deeply, collaborate closely with writers, and bring clarity, accuracy, and humanity to every story. This is a leadership role that blends newsroom rigor with magazine storytelling.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Top-to-bottom editing of multiple stories each week — from restructuring and rewriting to line edits and voice refinement.
  • Ensuring every story meets the highest standards of factual accuracy, sourcing, and tone.
  • Managing multiple drafts on tight weekly deadlines.

You’re a great fit if you:

  • Are a seasoned editor with deep experience in longform, magazine, or digital storytelling.
  • Thrive on transforming complex subjects — politics, law, global affairs, culture—into compelling, accessible narratives.
  • Have an unwavering commitment to accuracy, nuance, and accessible storytelling.
  • Can edit for both substance and style, helping writers sound more like themselves—only better.
  • Work fast, independently, and thrive under firm deadlines.
  • Have excellent research instincts and know where to find credible sources.
  • Value constructive collaboration and take feedback as an opportunity to refine your craft.

Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years of full-time professional editing experience in journalism, magazines, or digital media.
  • Proven ability to manage firm daily and weekly deadlines.
  • Background in features, investigative, or longform narrative work is highly desirable.
